As a freedom fighter who did not cooperate with the British, he jailed many times during the struggle for independence.
After India was freed from British rule, Sardar Patel worked tirelessly to unify the entire country through strong national integration. This is why he is called the 'Iron Man of India'.
Soon after India gained Independence, he was elected as the Home Minister and later Deputy Prime Minister.
He was the recipient of the Bharat Ratna Award in 1991.
As national leader, he firmly believed in the power of unity. It was this belief that helped him unite a divided India.
His birth anniversary is observed as 'Rashtriya Ekta Diwas' or 'National Unity Day' in India, so that we never forget his message of strength in being united.
Sardar Patel's statue in Gujrat is known as the Statue of Unity. It is a popular destination, being the world's tallest statue.
